Hidden Thailand – Part 1: The Secret Gems of the South
Koh Yao Yai & Koh Yao Noi

Koh Yao Yai (“The Big Long Island”)

In southern Thailand, in the heart of Phang Nga Bay, between Phuket and Krabi, lie two secluded islands: Koh Yao Yai and Koh Yao Noi. The larger island, Koh Yao Yai, is famous for its quiet beaches, mangrove forests, and small fishing villages. Rubber plantations stretch through the island and add to its local charm.

You can reach Koh Yao Yai by boat from Phuket, Krabi, or Phang Nga. We arrived on a private speedboat arranged by the Anantara Koh Yao Yai resort where we stayed.

Koh Yao Yai is peaceful and stunning. It is perfect for travelers who want to escape the crowds and see an authentic side of Thailand. Although it is very close to Phuket, one of Thailand’s busiest destinations, it still feels hidden and calm. Its proximity to Koh Yao Noi makes it easy to explore both islands, especially during low tide when they seem even closer.

The majority of the island’s residents are Muslim, about 95 percent, and their traditions give Koh Yao Yai its calm and welcoming atmosphere. Small family-run restaurants serve local dishes, and there are only a few modest bars. Nightlife is almost nonexistent, which allows visitors to slow down and enjoy the island’s natural beauty. Here, travelers experience an uncommercialized side of Thailand that feels genuine and pure.

A tour around the island offers a rare glimpse into daily life and the connection between people and sea. It is an experience you will not find on Thailand’s busier islands.

For travelers seeking something unique and authentic, Koh Yao Yai is an excellent choice. It is close to major destinations, easy to reach, and offers a peaceful retreat with charming places to stay.

Koh Yao Noi (“The Small Long Island”)

Koh Yao Noi, often called the quiet sister of Koh Yao Yai, has a charming and peaceful atmosphere. It is perfect for travelers who want to experience Thailand as it once was, before the rise of mass tourism.

Both islands offer an escape from the crowds, but Koh Yao Noi stands out for its mix of natural beauty and Andaman culture. The island is home to green rice fields, forested hills, and a close-knit local community. Visitors are warmly welcomed to share in traditional life and daily routines.

Koh Yao Noi has become a favorite for travelers who value untouched nature, calm surroundings, and a sense of genuine Thai living.

In contrast to Koh Yao Yai, which is known for its long beaches and mangrove forests, Koh Yao Noi offers easier trails for exploring. It is perfect for getting around by bicycle or scooter. Along the way, you can ride through small villages, stop at family cafés, and visit local markets filled with fresh produce and handmade crafts.

The island is ideal for travelers who want to connect with local life. Many visitors stay with local families or join guided cultural tours to learn about traditional customs. Koh Yao Noi is only a short boat ride from Koh Yao Yai or Phuket. It remains a hidden gem in Phang Nga Bay, full of charm and timeless beauty.

How to Get to Koh Yao Yai and Koh Yao Noi?

Both islands are located in the middle of Phang Nga Bay, making them easily accessible from several popular destinations:

  • From Phuket: The most common route is by speedboat or longtail boat from Bang Rong Pier on the east coast of Phuket. The ride takes about 30–40 minutes.

  • From Krabi: Boats depart from Ao Nang or Tha Len Pier, with a journey of about 30–45 minutes.

  • From Phang Nga: You can also reach the islands directly by boat from piers in Phang Nga province.

Many resorts, especially higher-end ones, offer private speedboat transfers, which are faster and more comfortable.
Once you arrive, it’s easy to move between Koh Yao Yai and Koh Yao Noi—a short 10–15 minute boat ride connects the two sister islands.

How Long to Stay in Koh Yao Yai and Koh Yao Noi?

The length of your stay on the islands really depends on what you want to do. One day is enough to explore each island at a basic level, but many travelers find them to be the perfect places to slow down, unwind, and enjoy several days of peace and disconnection. You can also spend a few days on the islands and use them as a base for day trips around Phuket and Krabi, such as a boat excursion to the famous James Bond Island.

One of the trips we took was a boat tour to Hong Island (Hong Island Nature Trail), where you can enjoy a short jungle trek on the island.

Or climb a few hundred steps to reach the island’s stunning viewpoint overlooking the Blue Lagoon.

How to Get Around Koh Yao Yai and Koh Yao Noi?

The best way to get around the islands is by motorbike, as taxi services are limited and relatively expensive. Motorbike rentals are readily available upon arrival, and most accommodations offer them directly to their guests.

Riding a motorbike allows you to explore the islands at your own pace, discover hidden beaches, and enjoy stunning views. Keep in mind that cycling on regular bicycles is not recommended, as the terrain can be challenging due to the heat and numerous hills.

When is the best time to visit Koh Yao Yai and Koh Yao Noi?

The ideal time to visit the islands (as with most of Southeast Thailand) is between December and April, when the weather is dry and sunny. However, keep in mind that during the month of Ramadan (usually falling in March–April, depending on the year), some restaurants may not serve food during daytime hours. We visited in September and were lucky to enjoy wonderful weather with very little rain—but that certainly depends on luck.
