Hidden Thailand – Part 2: A Journey into the Heart of Thailand
with Three Unforgettable Days in Khao Sok National Park
A Bit About Khao Sok National Park
Khao Sok, one of Thailand’s largest and most impressive national parks, covers an area of about 739 square kilometers and encompasses dense jungles, a vast lake, and a rich variety of flora and fauna.
Established in 1980, it is considered one of the country’s best-preserved natural areas and plays a crucial role in protecting Thailand’s biodiversity.
The Khao Sok region has always held historical and cultural importance. For centuries, local tribes lived here, and in the 20th century, it even became a refuge for rebel groups who hid in the forest.
In the 1970s, the Ratchaprapha Dam was built, creating the stunning Cheow Lan Lake, famous for its emerald waters and dramatic limestone karst formations rising above the surface. Today, this lake is the centerpiece of the park, giving it its unique beauty and attracting visitors from all over the world.
The park’s diverse vegetation includes bamboo groves, fig trees, and an incredible array of flowers—among them the Rafflesia, one of the largest and rarest flowers in the world, which can only be spotted here during certain seasons. Khao Sok is also renowned for its rich wildlife, home to wild elephants, tigers, gibbons, macaques, and many other species that make this a truly unique natural destination.
For anyone dreaming of a deep connection with nature and experiences far beyond the everyday, our three days in Khao Sok National Park became one of the most exciting adventures I’ve ever had. We chose to escape the bustling cities and crowded beaches, and instead discovered a different side of Thailand—wild, untouched, and magical.
First Evening – Longtail Boat Safari in Search of Wildlife
On our first evening, we dedicated ourselves to a longtail boat tour, aiming to experience the park’s wildlife at sunset, as the sun slowly disappeared behind the mountains.
With every meter we drifted farther from the hotel, the silence around us deepened, stirring feelings of curiosity and anticipation for what lay ahead. The whispers of the water and the sounds of the jungle accompanied us, while mysterious calls echoed above the lake’s surface.
During our boat tour, we were fortunate to encounter some of the wild creatures that make Khao Sok such a remarkable place. Here are some of the highlights:
Gaur: One of our first encounters in Khao Sok was with the mighty gaur, also known as the banteng—huge and impressive wild cattle considered among the largest mammals in the region.
Standing calmly on the green slopes, their massive presence against the dense jungle backdrop was awe-inspiring. Moving silently in small herds, they seemed almost unaffected by our presence. Witnessing these rare animals in their natural environment was a powerful reminder of the wilderness Khao Sok protects.
Gibbons: With swift, graceful movements among the tall trees, gibbons created a mesmerizing sight. Their calls echoed in the distance, as if announcing their location—or perhaps simply teasing us. Watching them play in the canopy was both fascinating and unforgettable.
Macaques: These playful and energetic monkeys were often seen near the water. They watched us curiously, sometimes edging closer, as if sharing in our curiosity. Gathering in small groups, peeking out from the foliage, they added a lively and engaging touch to the experience.
Hornbills: Stunning birds with large, distinctive beaks, hornbills are an inseparable part of Khao Sok’s landscape. At sunset, they circled high above the trees, their colorful wings brushing the darkening sky like strokes of a paintbrush. Seeing them soar above us as the boat glided slowly forward was deeply moving.
Eagles and raptors: Majestic birds of prey were spotted flying high, scanning for food, radiating power and calm. At one point, we held our breath as an eagle passed overhead, letting out a sharp cry that echoed across the forest.
Monitor lizards: Along the rocky shoreline, we spotted large monitor lizards moving with a quiet, commanding presence. Imposing in size and demeanor, they embodied the raw mystery of life in such a wild, water-rich environment.
Water snakes: Occasionally, smooth ripples through the reeds gave away the presence of water snakes. Their dark bodies blended seamlessly with the surroundings, moving with an elegance that tied together the watery realm and the green jungle.
By the time we returned to the hotel, I was left with a profound sense of connection to nature. The silence, the wildlife, and the hypnotic glow of the sunset over the lake created an evening filled with wonder and enchantment.
Day Two – Trek to the Coral Cave
On the second day, we set out early in the morning by boat for our next adventure—a trek that would lead us to the Coral Cave nature reserve. From the very beginning, it was clear this was going to be a special day—everything around us was lush and quiet, as if the forest was embracing us from every direction.
The trail wasn’t easy, but it was absolutely worth the effort, with narrow paths winding through dense vegetation and endless green landscapes. The sounds of the jungle accompanied us along the way, and every so often we could hear the calls of wildlife hidden among the trees.
On the way to the cave, as we trekked through the jungle, we searched for and came across an abundance of wildlife unique to this region—a diversity that made me feel as if I had stepped into a classic adventure film. Here are some of the animals and insects you might encounter in the reserve:
Thai Elephant: One of the most iconic symbols of Thailand. In Khao Sok, wild elephants can sometimes be spotted from a distance as they creep through the forest. They walk with surprising grace, lifting their trunks toward the tall leaves in search of food.
When we noticed broken trees and massive footprints on the ground, our guide explained that witnessing them in the wild is a breathtaking experience—one we might be lucky enough to have this time.
Magnificent Butterflies: Khao Sok is home to an astonishing variety of butterflies in countless colors and sizes. As they flutter among the plants, they look like natural ornaments against the lush green backdrop. There were moments when we paused just to watch them dance in the air, adding a touch of magic to our journey, and even landing with gentle elegance on our shoulders.
Colorful Parrots and Tropical Birds: Among the tall trees, you can spot parrots and other tropical birds in dazzling colors. They chirp and call out to one another with harsh yet distinctive sounds, always seeming to be in motion. One of the most memorable moments for me was when I spotted a vibrant parrot perched on a relatively low branch, allowing me to observe it up close.
Fascinating Insects and Reptiles: Along the trail, we also encountered various species of insects and reptiles, often difficult to spot against the dense vegetation. But once you notice them, it feels like discovering a whole new world. Particularly striking were the glowing fireflies, adding touches of magical light as we approached the cave.
After a long walk, we finally reached the end of the trail, where a flat wooden boat awaited us to take us toward the Coral Cave. The ride was calm and peaceful, with the sounds of nature all around creating a sense of anticipation for what awaited us inside the cave.
The cave itself was breathtaking, with coral formations and natural rock structures resembling ancient sculptures.
The Coral Cave was formed around 10,000 years ago as a result of geological processes that took place over thousands of years.
The combination of complete darkness, flickering shadows, and the cave’s unique atmosphere made me feel like an explorer in an unknown world. It was hard to believe that such a place could exist in the heart of the jungle, so well hidden from the outside world.
